Also does Adult Close Up Magic
I am equally
at home performing for adults or children. Or even a mix of the two. My
children's entertainment involves comedy magic, puppetry or
ventriloquism and balloon modelling. For adults I offer close up magic
and can, when required, finish with a big illusion. All my presentations
aim to produce a combination of laughter and amazement.

Many parents just prefer my 45 minute show; others wish me to run the
whole party. My aim is to evoke laughter and astonishment. I wear a
Wizard s costume - a long flowing robe with a pointed hat.
I vary my materials regularly, partly to keep the entertainment fresh
but mainly to ensure that the same children do not see me performing the
same tricks. I always take into account the age range of the children in
front of me and carefully choose the items accordingly.
I limit shows to 45 minutes because of children s attention span. All my
presentations keep to the same balance about 33 minutes of magic, 7
minutes of puppetry (or ventriloquism) and 5 minutes scattered through
the act making shapes from balloons. For birthdays, I finish the act
with the birthday child creating his/her card by magic and receiving a
gift and a spectacular balloon model from me.
If a parent requires, I can also run the whole party (apart from
supplying food, party bags and decorative balloons), usually for two
hours but longer if there are more than 20 children and parents wish it.
Apart from my normal shows I've developed four special presentations.
The first of these targets the Under Fives. It s ideal for nurseries,
playgroups and early school performances. I've designed it to appeal to
a very young child's understanding of the world. I don t recommend
longer than 30-35 minutes.
The second presentation is aimed at Harry Potter fans aged 8 upwards.
I've been a HP fan since Day One and right from the start began creating
a show with HP references. I don t pretend to duplicate the special
effects of the movies or to bring to life the magical incidents in the
books. I cross-reference the magic I perform in this act to the
characters and eerie mood of the stories, still aiming at laughter but
with much stronger illusions, which usually produce gasps. I had a
special costume made for the purpose, far more dramatic and spectacular
than my normal one.
When booked for parties of up to 20 children aged 9 and upwards, I offer
close up magic, with my young audience sitting round a table. I enlist
each child as an assistant and give each a reward for helping.
Finally, when booked for department stores, shop fronts, malls, garden
fetes, fairs or other outdoor or large-scale venues, I propose a
Walkabout . The costume I wear depends on the nature of the event.
Usually organisers prefer me to wear a wizard s costume and target the
children, making masses of balloon models in the process, but to include
magic for the adults as well. The balloons and tricks I perform lie
inside a specially designed table on wheels, which I can move around,
even on the roughest surfaces.
CLOSE UP MAGIC FOR ADULTS
(magicians refer to it as Table Hopping );
This works best in restaurants or at weddings, christenings, dinner
parties, private functions, round table or Masonic get-togethers and
even in clubs and pubs. It consists of moving from table to table or one
small group to another at an event, performing magic and tongue-in-cheek
comedy directly under the noses of my spectators. I also inject a small
amount of balloon modelling, handing the finished products to guests as
I go along.
This is not just a load of old card tricks, though ! I have a large
repertoire of magic with other objects rings, keys, shoelaces, treasury
notes, ropes, sponges, poker chips, matchboxes. Oh, yes, I do card
tricks but they differ from anything else the audience will have seen.
Occasionally I add a little mind reading.
I can also offer palm reading. My usual procedure is to introduce this
after I have completed my tour performing close up at the tables. By
this time most guests are usually dancing so that my palm reading is
like a side show entertaining people one at a time.
I wear two different costumes. For smaller private affairs a simple
black outfit trousers, waistcoat and brightly coloured shirt with the
sleeves rolled up. At larger events a specially made Victorian costume
frock coat, top hat, ruffle, waist-high trousers and all the trimmings.
My props lie in a small table on wheels, which I push around from group
to group. I also bring a modest amplifier to ensure my voice is heard
when acoustics are poor or there s background noise.
